First Call for Abstracts

British Postgraduate Philosophy Association Annual Conference

23rd-25th June 2015

University of Southampton, UK

We invite submissions to the 2015 BPPA conference, to be held in the University of Southampton on the 23rd-25th June, 2015. The conference will provide a platform for postgraduate philosophy students to present their research and share ideas in a supportive and collegial environment. It will also include, on the 25th, a careers day with vocational advice.

Please send anonymised abstracts of between 500 and 800 words for papers of 20-25 minutes to Mr James Camien McGuiggan at bppa.soton.2015 by 1 May 2015. Queries are welcome and should be directed to the same address. Submissions are welcome in any area and tradition of philosophy, and should be in a standard file format (e.g., .doc, .docx, .pdf, .odt). We also invite volunteers to give brief, c.-5-minute, responses to the papers. A small bursary is available from the British Philosophy of Sport Association (BPSA) for any papers accepted on the philosophy of sport.

We will try to secure funding to cover expenses for as many participants as possible. However, participants are encouraged to apply for funding from their home institution.

There will be two keynotes, one of whom is confirmed to be Prof. Stephen Mulhall (Oxford).

The University of Southampton is committed to equality along all axes, and submissions from under-represented groups are especially welcome. The conference will be held in an accessible building, and if you have any particular requirements, including dietary requirements, we will do all we can to accommodate. All abstracts will be double-blind reviewed.

We are maintaining a website (www.ocs.soton.ac.uk/index.php/bppa) with news regarding the conference.

We gratefully acknowledge the British Philosophical Association’s (BPA) and the University of Southampton’s support in hosting this event.

Submission information:

Submissions of high quality in any area of philosophy will be considered. This year we encourage papers focused especially on the topic of Rationality. Rationality has a central place in areas as diverse as ethics, decision theory, philosophy of science, philosophy of action, epistemology, philosophy of mind and feminist philosophy. The idea has also been of paramount importance to a variety of figures throughout the history of philosophy, including Aristotle, Aquinas, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, Habermas, Wittgenstein, and Kuhn, to name just a few. What is it to be rational? Is there a formal model for the behavior of rational agents? Is rationality an individual or a collective notion? This conference aims to explore the varieties of rationality at play within philosophy, their connections, and their differences.

– All submissions must be prepared for blind review. The paper must have no identifying information and must include at the top an abstract of no more than 250 words.
– Submitted papers must be no more than 4500 words in length.
– Submitted papers must be received as .doc, .docx or .pdf files no later than 11 January, 2015.
