UCL Event Invitation

Dear LSE Philosophy,

The UCL Legal and Political Theory course would like to invite LSE Philosophy students and faculty to an upcoming event featuring Dr. Andrea Sangiovanni.

“Cosmopolitanism is the philosophical doctrine of fundamental human equality. According to cosmopolitans, every person has global stature as the ultimate unit of moral concern and is therefore entitled to equal respect and consideration, no matter what her citizenship status or other affiliations happen to be.

The cosmopolitan vision for the world is facing unprecedented threats. Terrorism and other security concerns are on the rise as immigrants from war-torn and resource-stressed nations have streamed into Europe and North America, seeking refuge. Nationalist and populist sentiment has spiked dramatically, reflected in myriad social movements and increasingly isolationist policies across the West. Additionally, an increased sensitivity to race and gender in conceptualizing egalitarian frameworks for our collective future has posed direct challenges to cosmopolitanism ideals. In light of these facts, should cosmopolitans modify or abandon their doctrine? If so, how, or in favor of what? Considering the state of our world, what’s the future for cosmopolitanism?

Esteemed scholars Andrea Sangiovanni, Ashwini Vasanthakumar, and David Miller will join us to discuss this pressing subject.

The event will be held May 17th in UCL’s JZ Young Lecture Theatre (G29) in the Anatomy Building from 6pm-8pm.

Questions about the event can be directed to michael.cohen.17”

Please let me know if this is possible or if you need anything else. Thanks very much!

All the best,

Michael Cohen
