Climate Change and the Laudato Si, Public Discussion with Lord Nicholas Stern, Thursday 10th March

‘Climate Change and the Laudato Si’: A Discussion with Lord Nick Stern and Professor Conor Gearty.

Thursday, 10th March 2016, 4.15-6pm

Wolfson Theatre, New Academic Building, LSE

Contributing to the global debate on climate change, Pope Francis issued a dramatic call for environmental action in May 2015 – ‘Laudato Si’’. The Laudato Si’ is a wide-ranging examination of environmental issues and climate change, in which the Pope argues strongly that social justice and climate protection are intertwined, and must be tackled together.

In this exciting discussion, jointly organised by LSE Housing and Communities and LSE CathSoc, Lord Nicholas Stern and Prof. Conor Gearty tackle issues such as Climate Change, social justice and the need for environmental action.

Followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Free event. All welcome.

RSVP to J.Rowan1

Event doors open at 4.15pm for a 4.30pm start.

How can political science, economics and philosophy contribute to shedding light on the current discussions around legitimacy in the 21st century? What are the latest research topics and hotly debated issues – and what is currently missing on the agenda?

The challenges facing modern society do not respect academic or national boundaries. In the highly complex and mutually interdependent societies of the 21st century, the most convincing and lasting impetus comes from individuals who think in interdisciplinary terms and know how to integrate economic, political and philosophical perspectives. Thus, the topic of “legitimacy” lends itself particularly well to our debate as it brings together a plethora of the yet-to-be-answered questions about what it actually means for a society to operate a morally legitimate, politically stable and economically viable social arrangement.
The aim of the conference is to give advanced undergraduate, graduate and PhD students working in the field of PPE an opportunity to present and discuss their projects with peers, receive feedback for work in progress, and build a wider community of interdisciplinary students across Germany, Europe and beyond.
The conference will consist of three keynote speeches and a series of paper sessions, organised by the scientific committee.

Call for Papers till February 29, 2016
Email papers to: ppe-conference
Scientific Committee
Laura Bickel and Anselm Houswitschka

The scientific committee will make a selection of participants based on the quality and relevance of the submitted papers. Papers’ expected length is between 6000 and 8000 words. Based on the presentations at the conference, the scientific committee will invite a selection of authors to contribute to a book published in 2016.

We particularly encourage you to develop your own thoughts on the theme, to connect your current seminar work with the conference topic … and to submit your own paper! We are looking forward to your ideas!
