International Women’s Public Speaking Workshop

From: Su.International

As the LSESU’s International Students’ Officer, I’m collaborating with Women in Politics, Women Leaders of Tomorrow and Women in Business, to host an interactive workshop for self defining international women eager to speak with more conviction, clarity and impact.

Our workshop’s going to be delivered in two stages.

The first will be a ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’ session by The Public Speaking Trust, who have worked with more than 250,000 people from 1,000 institutions in the UK and aim to improve educational/ employment prospects as well as the power of voice in bringing positive change.

The second half will see multiple debate tournament competitor and LSE third year Saskia Neibig discuss whether women should "defeminise" in order to succeed in the public sphere, followed by a short women’s only debate with friendly feedback.

Here’s the Facebook event for more details: SU.International

ABOUT

Eleanor Knox is a Lecturer in Philosophy at King’s College London. Her work has two strands, one in the foundations of spacetime physics, and another in inter-theoretic relations in physics and science more generally. The two come together when thinking about emergent spacetimes in theories of quantum gravity; much of her work focusses on Spacetime Functionalism, an approach to the interpretation of spacetime theories that promises to help us understand emergent spacetimes. After a BA, BPhil and DPhil at Oxford, Eleanor moved to London, first as a Chandaria Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, and then as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and then Lecturer at KCL. She is the winner of the 2015 James T. Cushing Prize in the History and Philosophy of Physics.

FURTHER INFO

Join us for dinner with the speaker after the talk! All are welcome and there are a small number of subsidized places available for graduate students and members of the Society. Please register for dinner by emailing the Editor, Guy Longworth (G.H.Longworth), by the end of the week.

London Spinoza Circle: 25 January – Eric Schliesser on Spinoza and 18th Century Anti-mathematicism.”

For the next meeting of the London Spinoza Circle, we are pleased to have. Eric Schliesser (University of Amsterdam) who will speak on “Spinoza and 18th Century Anti-mathematicism.”

3pm – 5pm, Wednesday 25th January 2017 at

Birkbeck, University of London, School of Arts, Room B02, 43 Gordon Square, Kings Cross, London WC1H 0PD.

In this presentation, I identify and articulate three different kinds of critical attitudes toward the epistemic status and application of mathematics that were developed in the eighteenth century. Somewhat surprisingly, I suggest that all three of these can be found in the works of Spinoza and, paradoxically, were further developed in light of Spinoza’s own reliance on a geometric mode of presentation. In addition to the writings of Spinoza, I pay particular attention to works by Mandeville, Hume, and Buffon.

The following meeting of the London Spinoza Circle will be on Friday 10th March, 3pm – 5pm when Julie Klein (Villanova University) will speak on "Language, Reason, and Intellect in Spinoza" (location to be confirmed).

Details of all meetings are posted at londonspinozacircle.wordpress.com

Call for Papers – Sheffield Undergraduate Philosophy Conference & UG Philosophy Journal

From: Beatriz Perez Garcia <bperezgarcia1>
Subject: Call for Papers – Sheffield Undergraduate Philosophy Conference & UG Philosophy Journal

Good Morning,

I am writing on behalf of the University of Sheffield’s Philosophy Undergraduate Conference 2017 and the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy to invite undergraduate students in your department to submit papers for consideration for the conference and/or our third edition of the journal. If you could circulate this opportunity to your undergraduate students, we would be most grateful.

The Spring 2017 edition of PhilonoUS, the University of Sheffield’s Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy and the annual Sheffield Undergraduate Philosophy conference are now accepting submissions.

This year PhilonoUS: The Sheffield Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy and the Sheffield Undergraduate Philosophy Conference are teaming up so that authors need only submit once and will be considered for both the conference and journal unless they indicate otherwise within their email submission.

We welcome students from all philosophy departments, and we welcome submissions from students at all levels of study. The conference and journal are open to and aimed at all philosophy undergraduates, so please don’t think that only final year students are experienced enough to give a talk or submit a paper, that really isn’t the case.

The conference will take place on the 18th and 19th of March 2017 in the Humanities Research Institute on the University of Sheffield’s main campus. Papers should be no more than 6000 words in length, but can relate to any area of Philosophy. The deadline for submissions is Friday 27 January 2017, and submissions should be sent to u.g.phil.journal . No identifying information should be present within the paper, but the body of your email should contain your name, contact email, University of study and year of study. If your paper is under review elsewhere we cannot consider you for the journal, but we would still love to consider you for the conference. Authors will be notified of decisions at least four weeks prior to the conference.

If your paper is selected for the conference you will be asked to give a talk and this can either be a shorter talk of 15-20 minutes or a longer one of 30 minutes. Please let us know your preference when submitting your paper/abstract. The talk will be followed by approximately 15 minutes of questions which will be an opportunity to explore your ideas further. Don’t be put off by the length of time you will be asked to speak, it really isn’t as daunting as it sounds and the event will be a friendly, encouraging and collaborative environment.

All further details regarding submissions, publication and purchasing a copy of the journal can be found on our website at www.uosphilosophyjournal.wordpress.com

More information on the conference including updates on our keynote speakers can be found at http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/philosophy/events/ugconference

Should you require any further information please feel free to contact us at the above email address.

Many Thanks,

The Sheffield Undergraduate Philosophy Conference Organisers & PhilonoUS Editors.

Many women in the UK today are privileged to be given the opportunity to build exciting and meaningful careers. However, we may experience large amounts of pressure, especially as we drive ourselves to ‘have it all’, ‘do more’, ‘succeed faster’. Pressure in the workplace can be a motivating force but too much pressure can be detrimental to us, and our teams, over time.

During this interactive workshop we will share some thoughts on how to differentiate between positive and negative pressure and share some stories of exciting modern careers balanced with a healthy, fulfilling life. You will also have the opportunity to networking with like-minded peers and McKinsey consultants.

This workshop is for female PhD students in their penultimate and final year of study as well as Rhodes, Gates and Marshall Scholars. It will take place at 6pm on Friday 20th January in central London. The location of the workshop will be confirmed three days before the event.

We hope to see you there.

If you have any further questions, please email me at UKAPD_recruiting.

Best wishes,
