We’ll always have Paris:

COP21 and the new political economy of climate change

990ae783-95c3-411f-9aea-6198f54af71d.jpg
Speaker: Michael Jacobs
Chair: Prof. Samuel Fankhauser
Time & Date: 6.30pm – 8pm, Thursday, 18 February 2016
Venue: London School of Economics and Political Science, Old Theatre, Old Building, Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE

To register for this event, please click here

The lecture will be followed by a question & answer session with contributions from Dr Robert Falkner and Dr Alina Averchenkova.
The Paris Climate Change Agreement, achieved at the UN COP21 Conference in December, is the first legally-binding agreement on climate change since the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. Michael Jacobs worked closely with the French Government and various international organisations in the political process leading up to the conference, having previously been adviser to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the failed UN conference in Copenhagen in 2009.
In this lecture he will explore both the causes and the consequences of the Paris Agreement. Why and how was it achieved, where Copenhagen failed? What does the Agreement actually mean? And will it work? Examining the relationships between the economics of action on climate change, the politics of climate in Europe, the US, China and elsewhere, and the complex international relations of the UN negotiations, the lecture will ask: does the Agreement mark a historic turning point in the world’s efforts to combat global warming, or merely another empty set of promises?

Gender and Philosophy Summer School Program

This summer the Erasmus+ “Gender and Philosophy” program will be holding it’s first summer school in Reykjavík, Iceland. The theme of the summer school is “Philosophy of the Body” and it will take place during the 23rd-27th of May. The course is aimed at graduate students with background in philosophy and the teachers will be from USA, Switzerland and Iceland. The application deadline for the summer school in Iceland is the 15th of February 2016.

“Gender and Philosophy” was established in the fall of 2015, and is a collaborative project of four Nordic Universities: Aalborg University in Denmark, the University of Iceland, the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and the University of Oslo in Norway. The project contributes to establishing a Joint Nordic Master Program in Feminist Philosophy by producing new approaches, methods and pedagogics to be implemented into the curricula of the Master’s Program. The consortium creates synergies in innovative teaching and curricula development of feminist philosophy with the goal of enhancing and deepening the potential of philosophy to tackle current problems and issues. The Program will be launched after the summer schools and run by the Universities of Iceland, Jyväskylä and Oslo, in cooperation with the Aalborg University. The Program will be designed to attract students from within and beyond the European area.

Further information about the project, its summer schools, and the application procedure can be found at the projects website: http://www.genderandphilosophy.hi.is.

In our attempt to reach to as wide variety of students as possible it would be greatly appreciated if you could share the information about the project, and its upcoming summer school in Iceland in particular, within your University.

Many thanks for considering my request.

Elsa Haraldsdóttir

18th Annual Pitt-CMU Graduate Philosophy Conference

"Rules"

The graduate students of the University of Pittsburgh & Carnegie Mellon University invite graduate students to submit papers to our 18th annual graduate philosophy conference, on the topic of "Rules." The conference is co-sponsored by the Department of Philosophy, the Department of History & Philosophy of Science, and the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh; and the Department of Philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University.

Conference date: April 9-10, 2016 at the University of Pittsburgh

Keynote Speaker:
Edward Zalta
Senior Research Scholar
Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI)

Faculty Speaker:
John Norton
Distinguished Professor of History & Philosophy of Science
University of Pittsburgh

Submission deadline: January 22, 2016

Submission information: Submissions of high quality in any area of philosophy will be considered. This year we encourage papers focused especially on the topic of Rules. Rules play a central role in contexts as disparate as ethics, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, game and decision theory, political philosophy, mathematical and philosophical logic, and the philosophy of language. The questions surrounding rules are just as wide ranging. What, if any, are the norms guiding ethical reasoning? What makes a good, appropriate, or fruitful rule of inference in logic? How do we analyze the rules of learning, especially in the case of induction? To what extent do linguistic practices codify rules and patterns of thought or vice versa? What are the norms of rationality and how do they relate to empirical data as well as broader epistemological concerns? This conference aims to explore rules in their many guises.

– All submissions must be prepared for blind review. The paper must have no identifying information and must include an abstract of no more than 250 words.
– Submitted papers must be no more than 4500 words in length.
– Submitted papers must be received as .doc, .docx, or .pdf files by January 22, 2016.
– Accepted papers will be announced in mid-February 2016.
